Cornwall Council are a partner of Vision Zero South West and represent this partnership as the motorcycle theme lead. The Council’s Casualty Reduction Strategy acknowledges that motorcycles make up less than 1% of traffic, but account for 26% of Killed or Seriously Injured casualties; making motorcycles one of our priority road user groups.
Work is underway at a local and South West level to target casualty reduction outcomes for this vulnerable road user.

The Service has an active Road Safety Team including a specific motorcycle team who integrate with the motorcycle community in our area. The Service is fully committed in working to reduce the number and severity of Road Safety collisions, for all users.
It is however focused on targeting its activities toward the most at risk groups, these being Young Drivers and Motorcyclists. These represent the highest collision numbers and subsequently the highest casualty levels of all the people that travel on our roads.
Young riders are especially vulnerable, and we are working with partners and the community to identify the best options to support them and reduce both the number and severity of their injuries. We undertake direct intervention where we can, being recognised as both non-judgemental and trustworthy. We enjoy the opportunity to do so where it exists.
We have an open route for engagement either via our website https://www.dsfire.gov.uk/ or our Facebook page (Biker Down Devon & Somerset). https://www.facebook.com/bikerdowndevonandsomerset/
Please work with us to reduce the casualty rates on our roads. Young riders are our future, and we are here to support you.

RideTo is the UK’s #1 platform for motorcycle training. Born out of our founder James’ own experience learning to ride. As a new rider caught by the riding bug in 2016 he found the process of getting on two wheels confusing, lacking transparency, and a bit behind the times. With an idea for something different, RideTo was founded.
We make learning to ride a simple and easy thing to do. Along with our digital platform and New Rider Journal, we work with over 130 vetted motorcycle training schools across the country to train over 20,000 people to learn to ride every year.

Vision Zero South West (VZSW) is a strategic and operational collaboration of 17 organisations all with a vested interest in casualty reduction. Our shared vision is for the road network of Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly to be free of death and serious injury by 2040.
A number of subgroups have been established to develop and commission initiatives and activity focusing on 8 priority themes that have been identified; all targeting casualty reduction outcomes. One of the priority themes is motorcycles; a road user group that is over represented in collisions and a group whose risk of death is at least 57 times higher than that of a car occupant, primarily due to riders not benefitting from protective features such as seat belts, airbags and other impact protection features.
This road user groups is and will continue to be a priority for VZSW and its partners.
