Project Apex

Project Apex is a partnership between the National Police Chief’s Council and National Highways to improve road safety for motorcyclists.

Ride Craft Hub
One element of Project Apex is an online platform called the Ride Craft Hub.

The hub aims to encourage better and safer riding through sharing the expertise of the nation’s best riders – blue light,
track and civilian. It hopes to become a destination for riders curious about how to be better on the bike.

Through promotion on social media, in the press and through engagement activity by officers on the ground, Project Apex encourages its audience through to more content and deeper engagement held on the Ride Craft Hub website.

Young rider workshops
In 2024 the Road Policing Unit (RPU) in Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire launched new biker workshops for 16 to 19 year-olds with the aim of reducing the number of young motorcyclists killed or seriously injured.

The workshops include:

  • An observed ride by police riders and slow riding course.
  • The importance of the correct PPE.
  • Immediate first aid.
  • Hazards perception utilising the latest in VR technology.
  • Basic maintenance.

All parts of the workshop (other than the observed rides) are presented by non-police staff (fire fighters, members of the motorcycling industry, self-employed mechanics).

All workshops will be held on non-police premises and officers conducting the observed rides will be on unmarked machines and in subdued high visibility clothing. All of which is designed to put the candidates ‘at ease’ whilst engaging with police officers.

On completion of the workshop and a feedback form those in attendance will receive a £100 voucher redeemable for protective equipment.

Motorcycle simulator
A bespoke hazard perception simulator programme has been developed, in partnership with a Spanish company called Lander.

Using a real motorbike – a Honda CB500X – the simulator uses authentic controls including brakes, clutch, throttle and indicators to replicate real-life road conditions.

The rider is surrounded by seamlessly integrated video screens to provide a truly immersive experience. All manner of road layouts, weather conditions and driving environments can be replicated in an instant – enhanced by realistic vibration, surround sound and working wing mirrors. The custom software is designed to improve riders’ hazard awareness skills and can recreate any number of scenarios. Real-time analysis is conducted by our team of expert operators – many of whom are police motorbike instructors – who provide detailed feedback and advice on how to improve your riding.
